Sisters Izulu and Zuri were both born at Hertfordshire Zoo (formerly Paradise Wildlife Park). They were beloved figures at the zoo for many years, they brought joy to countless visitors. Izulu, known for her calm and composed demeanour, contrasts with Zuri, affectionately nicknamed ‘the troublemaker’ for her playful antics, from chasing pigeons to dismantling plants.
White lions like Izulu and Zuri owe their distinctive white coats to a genetic condition known as leucism. While they are not a separate subspecies of African lion, these stunning lionesses provide visitors with a unique chance to understand the complex genetics of big cats as well as acting as ambassadors for their species.
Izulu arrived at the Sanctuary alongside her sister Zuri on 6th January 2025 from our sister park, Hertfordshire Zoo. The lionesses new enclosure adjoins male African lion Kasanga’s enclosure, he is spending time sitting at the mesh watching the sisters. Izulu generally allows Zuri to take the lead with exploring!
As Zuri made her presence known to Kasanga, Izulu was initially more reserved but she seems very happy with her handsome new neighbour. She took the move and transition in her stride and went about her day as she would usually do alongside her younger, more outgoing sister!
