The Big Cat Sanctuary is thrilled to announce the arrival of Bua, a stunning clouded leopard. This marks a significant milestone for the Sanctuary, as Bua's arrival introduces a new species that hasn’t been part of our family since 2018.
Born on August 10, 2017, at Howletts Wild Animal Park, Bua is an exceptional hunter known for her impressive skill at catching squirrels. Her previous keepers say that she has a playful and mischievous side, with a habit of destroying things and a love for food. However, she isn't a fan of working too hard to get her meals. In the summer, Bua enjoys basking in the sun, often finding a peaceful spot to relax on her own.
To welcome Bua, we undertook a major renovation of what was previously a puma enclosure. Over the past six months, our team has worked tirelessly to create a state-of-the-art facility. This new enclosure is designed with a strong focus on animal welfare and comfort, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for Bua. It also facilitates the safe integration of males and females, which is essential for being a part of the coordinated breeding program. There are plenty of platforms for Bua to climb for her to show off her incredible climbing skills.
Clouded leopards are a unique and elusive species, known for their striking appearance and arboreal lifestyle. They play a crucial role in the ecosystem as apex predators, and their conservation is vital. They are classed as 'Vulnerable' on the ICUN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List. By introducing Bua to our Sanctuary, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these magnificent cats and their natural habitats.
Bua is part of the breeding programme and there is hope that the Sanctuary will also be able to welcome a male clouded leopard in hopes the two will breed and help support their species.
For the meantime, please join us in giving a warm welcome to Bua as she settles into her new home. We shall share any updates on our website and on social media and we hope you have the opportunity to meet Bua very soon.
There are still spaces available on our Conversation Conversation event featuring the Clouded Leopard Working Group, and the perfect chance to meet our newest resident and learn all about Bua's species. Click HERE to book!
