Rescuing Rhys, the Eurasian Lynx

Meet Rhys the Eurasian Lynx!

The Big Cat Sanctuary has recently welcomed Rhys, a Eurasian lynx, to his new home after being rescued from the Cat Survival Trust on 23rd January. Rhys is beginning a new chapter of life living in a spacious and enriched environment where he can truly thrive.

The newest arrival has been settling in beautifully, exploring his new habitat with curiosity and confidence. Rhys has now found a place where he can relax and begin to feel truly at home. The Big Cat Sanctuary also welcomed Frank, the UK’s only Asian golden cat, and Boson, a fishing cat on the 7th January.

How is Rhys settling in?

The Big Cat Sanctuary team have been impressed by Rhys’ calm and inquisitive nature. The day after his arrival, he was given access to his outside habitat. He tentatively explored his new home, taking in his surroundings and smells. Look out for his signature tail wag, which indicates his playful and excited nature.

This is the start of a new chapter for Rhys and the other rescued cats,” said Cam Whitnall, Project Lead at The Big Cat Sanctuary. “We’re thrilled to see him adjusting so well and we can’t wait to watch him continue to grow in his new home.

Cat Survival Trust

The Big Cat Sanctuary and Hertfordshire Zoo successfully rescued 23 of the 28 exotic cats from challenging conditions at The Cat Survival Trust. These cats included pumas, bobcats, and lynxes, who were rehomed across the UK. Sadly five cats, due to their old age and severe health conditions, were euthanised on welfare grounds after it was determined that their quality of life could not be improved.

With the combined efforts of both teams, not one cat has been euthanised outside of those needing to on welfare grounds. They all have second chances.
