Frank's Next Chapter - The Big Cat Sanctuary

Frank’s Next Chapter

Frank the UK’s Only Asian golden cat embarks on next chapter in vital European breeding programme

Frank, the UK’s only Asian golden cat, is preparing to move from The Big Cat Sanctuary to Tierpark Berlin as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), marking a significant milestone for the conservation of his species.

Frank arrived at The Big Cat Sanctuary on 7 January 2025, following his rescue from the Cat Survival Trust. Hertfordshire Zoo and The Big Cat Sanctuary stepped in to rescue 23 cats after the owner was convicted of animal welfare offences, with four of those cats, including Frank, finding a new home here at the Sanctuary.

Now, twenty months on, Frank is ready for the next chapter of his story. He will be moving to Tierpark Berlin to join the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), where he will play an important role in the conservation of his species.

During his two years at the Sanctuary, Frank became an invaluable ambassador for wild Asian golden cats (Catopuma temminckii). Native to Southeast Asia, these medium-sized wild cats are listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to severe habitat loss and poaching.

Although known for his shy nature, Frank settled into a happy routine at The Sanctuary, could be seen quietly exploring his platforms and walkways at his own pace. As one of only twelve Asian golden cats currently housed in European zoos, his presence in the UK has provided a rare and vital learning opportunity about this elusive species.

Frank’s upcoming transfer to Tierpark, Berlin offers the best possible future for his contribution to the species’ survival, while ensuring his individual wellbeing remains the top priority. Welfare comes first, and Frank will reside at Tierpark’s main site, enjoying a purpose-built new habitat alongside other Asian golden cats. Crucially, the zoo also operates a specialised reproductive facility nearby, opening up vital opportunities for artificial insemination and advanced reproductive technology to support managed breeding efforts.

Cam Whitnall, conservationist and Managing Director of The Big Cat Sanctuary, said: “It has been an incredible privilege for all of us to care for Frank over the last two years. Whilst we will miss seeing him explore his enclosure, this move to Tierpark Berlin represents the best chance for the preservation of Asian golden cats. Giving Frank the opportunity to contribute to the breeding programme is a huge step forward for the conservation of his species”.

The team at The Big Cat Sanctuary will oversee Frank’s transition to Tierpark, ensuring his journey to Germany is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
