Roars, Paws and Claws


How do cats, from the biggest to the smallest survive in the wild? Learn all about the special adaptations from camouflage to claws that different cat species have to live and hunt in their environments.

Suitable for reception students

Roars, Paws and Claws meets the following areas of the National Curriculum:
  • identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores
  • describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals

Helping Habitats


What is happening to the world’s habitats? Explore where different cats live, investigate why big cat habitats are disappearing and what conservationists are doing to help!

Helping Habitats meets the following areas of the National Curriculum:
  • identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
  • describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

Which cats live in Africa? Learn all about the wild cat species found across Africa focusing on the differences between the many African wild cat species before exploring their threats and learning about the people who are working hard to protect them!

Native African Wild Cats meets the following areas of the National Curriculum:
  • identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
  • describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals

The Lost Species – Conservation and Extinction


A book-based session to help younger students begin to understand the harder concepts of extinction and conservation. Using excerpts from the book The Lost Species by Jess French and Daniel Long to look at extinct animals, then exploring threats cats face today, students create a simple poster or acrostic poem to raise awareness of a threatened species. A great way to learn about conservation whilst developing reading and writing skills!

  • recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things

What does it take to look after our amazing cat species?  In this session, students will find out what a day in the life of a wild cat zookeeper is like and what we need to do to ensure the best lives for the cats in our care.
