Celebrating 25 Years of The Big Cat Sanctuary

A Day to Remember

On 1st June 2025, we celebrated our 25th anniversary, marking a major milestone in its mission to protect some of the world’s most endangered big cat species.

Founded in 2000 by Peter Sampson, the Sanctuary has grown from humble beginnings into one of the UK’s leading centres for wild cat rescue, welfare, and conservation. Over 160 guests joined us for the celebration to reflect on our journey and our growing global impact.

A highlight of the day was the official launch of the new book, Nothing’s Impossible: The Peter Sampson Story, a biography celebrating the remarkable life of the Sanctuary’s founder. Written by author Tim Ewbank, the book charts Peter’s inspiring journey from speedway rider to visionary conservationist. It’s a powerful story of passion, resilience, and reinvention, capturing the spirit of the man whose motto, “Keep happy, keep smiling,” remains at the heart of the Sanctuary’s mission today.

Adding to the incredible atmosphere was the grand reveal of a striking bronze statue, crafted by renowned artist and sanctuary trustee Steve Winterburn. The sculpture, representing Peter and Rocky, the rescued tiger cub who started it all. That single act of compassion over 25 years ago has since grown into a global mission to save and protect big and small cats in need.

Reflecting on our 25-year journey, Peter Sampson shared: “What began as a desire to help one animal in need has grown into something I never could have imagined. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together, and incredibly grateful to everyone who’s supported us over the years, including the team, volunteers, donors, and visitors. I know that the future of The Big Cat Sanctuary and the conservation of wild cats is in safe hands.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported the Sanctuary over the last 25 years”, says Cam Whitnall, conservationist and Managing Director of The Big Cat Sanctuary. “We’re shaping a 20-year vision, one that sees us leading globally, with world-class care, rescue, conservation, education, and a legacy that continues everything my Grandad set in motion. Here’s to the next 25 years.”

The first half of 2025 has already been a landmark year. In just six months, we have opened the new Lion Rescue Centre, the new home for five lions rescued from war-torn Ukraine, and rescued 28 wild cats from dire conditions, three of which now call the Sanctuary home. Not to mention the recent success of a snow leopard cub born to proud parents Laila and Yarko, their fourth successful participation in the International Endangered Species Breeding Programme.

We will continue to celebrate this incredible milestone, hosting a series of events throughout the year, including the Spots and Sparkles Gala Ball at Eastwell Manor, Wings and Whiskers, a 1940’s-themed evening at Headcorn Aerodrome, and their much-loved annual Open Days, for the first time hosting eight full days.

At The Big Cat Sanctuary, we are committed to the conservation of wild cats globally and is continually working to protect and preserve incredible species for many years to come.
