Blob's story

Blob the Bobcat was the final cat rehomed in a coordinated rescue effort to rehome 23 wild cats following the closure of the Cat Survival Trust. The facility was shut down after its owner was convicted of serious animal welfare offences.

With most of the animals quickly placed in new homes, Blob remained the last without a confirmed destination, due in part to licensing constraints and capacity limits at specialist facilities. On the final day of the rescue operation, The Big Cat Sanctuary’s Managing Director, Cam Whitnall, arranged temporary placement with Wildside Exotic Rescue and committed to finding Blob a permanent home.

After several months of planning and operational changes, Blob has now found a new home at the Sanctuary in Kent. His new habitat supports his needs, including space for enrichment, rest, and ongoing care.

Blob is now part of a group of rescued cats from the same facility, including Frank, the Asian golden cat, Boson, the fishing cat, and Rhys, the Eurasian lynx, all of whom are settling into their new surroundings at the Sanctuary.

About bobcats

Bobcats are the smallest of the four lynx species. They get their name from their short “bobbed” tail. They are muscular with long legs, tuffed ears and a ruff of fur around the face constant with the other lynx species.

They are most active during dawn, dusk and night, using stealth to hunt a wide range of prey, including rabbits, rodents, birds and occasionally small deer. Having excellent climbing and swimming abilities allows bobcats to navigate a variety of landscapes in search of food.

Bobcats are an adaptable species, capable of living in a variety of environments including forests, swamps, deserts and even areas near human settlements.

Despite increasing habitat fragmentation and human encroachment, the bobcat population remains stable across most of its range, thanks to an adaptable and elusive nature.
