He was quick to explore his new surroundings and is setting in exceptionally well!
Frank was one of two small cats to be rescued from Cat Survival Trust in Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire Zoo and The Big Cat Sanctuary joined forces in a race against time to rescue and rehome 28 rare and endangered cats from long-standing neglect.
This stunning cat is the only Asian golden cat in the UK and one of only a handful of individuals living in European zoos as part of the European Endangered Species Programme.
We are delighted to see him settling in well. His behaviour and health will be closely monitored to ensure he receives any treatment he needs, and he will receive the best care and live the life he deserves here with us at The Big Cat Sanctuary.
Adopt TodayThe Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) is a striking and enigmatic feline native to the dense forests of Southeast Asia. It is appropriately named for its shimmering coat, which ranges in colour from reddish-gold to grey and black. They typically weigh between 9 and 16kg (20–35lbs).
These cats inhabit a variety of forested environments including rainforests, dry deciduous forests and mountainous regions. Their range is large and stretches across most of Asia. Typically preferring altitudes up to 3,000 meters, these cats are skilled climbers and equally adept on the ground.
Asian golden cats are solitary, nocturnal, and elusive, making them challenging to study in the wild. Their diet consists of small mammals, birds, reptiles and larger prey like young deer. This adaptability ensures their survival across varied environments.
Listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, the Asian golden cat faces significant threats from habitat loss, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Rapid deforestation and human encroachment have fragmented their habitats, while they are also targeted for their beautiful fur and body parts.
As a key predator the Asian golden cat helps regulate populations of prey species contributing to the health of forest ecosystems. Protecting these cats not only ensures their survival, but supports the preservation of their biodiverse habitats which benefit countless other species.
