Sisters Zuri and Izulu were both born at Hertfordshire Zoo (formerly Paradise Wildlife Park). They were beloved figures at the zoo for many years, they brought joy to countless visitors. Izulu, known for her calm and composed demeanour, contrasts with Zuri, affectionately nicknamed ‘the troublemaker’ for her playful antics, from chasing pigeons to dismantling plants.
White lions like Zuri and Izulu owe their distinctive white coats to a genetic condition known as leucism. While they are not a separate subspecies of African lion, these stunning lionesses provide visitors with a unique chance to understand the complex genetics of big cats as well as acting as ambassadors for their species.
Zuri arrived at the Sanctuary alongside her sister Izulu on 6th January 2025 from our sister park, Hertfordshire Zoo. Both lionesses travelled well and were quick to explore their new surroundings. True to form, Zuri confidently took the lead, climbing onto the platform to enjoy her new surroundings and observing her handsome new neighbour Kasanga.
She watched him mindfully, not making too much direct eye contact but she appeared very interested in him! Bold in nature she was keen to be noticed by him, showing a lot more interest than her sister in the initial stages. The sisters have settled in wonderfully and seem at ease with their majestic neighbour Kasanga!
