After a long and challenging journey, five rescued lions from Ukraine have finally found safety and comfort at The Lion Rescue Centre, part of The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. For four of them, this is the first time they have ever felt grass beneath their paws.
Rori, Amani, Lira, and Vanda have joined Yuna, who arrived August 2024, after a ten month rescue mission led by Cam Whitnall and the team at The Big Cat Sanctuary. Many of these lions came from heartbreaking backgrounds; neglected and confined to concrete enclosures, exploited for illegal breeding, or even kept as pets. Their arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter where they can finally heal.
The Lion Rescue Centre was built specifically to provide a safe, comfortable space for these big cats to recover, thanks to the generosity of supporters who helped raise £500,000 to make it possible. Each habitat has been carefully designed to suit the individual needs of the lions. For example, Yuna’s space has been adapted to accommodate her neurological challenges, with gentle slopes and no high platforms to ensure her safety.
Cam Whitnall, Managing Director of The Big Cat Sanctuary, shared the emotional moment when the lions first stepped outside:
“We are so relieved to have these rescued lions safe and settled in their forever home. Seeing them touch grass for the first time was incredible. At first, they were hesitant, but now they are starting to relax, play, and explore their new surroundings.”
The Lion Rescue Centre officially opened on March 25th, with supporters including Big Cat Sanctuary ambassador Paul Hollywood, Baroness Hayman, and Dr. Gillian Fargher in attendance. From July, visitors will have the chance to see these incredible lions during the Sanctuary’s open days.
